TLM models of bending transients and their application to the deformation of thin-walled ceramic shapes. (English) Zbl 1012.74040

Summary: A transmission line matrix (TLM) model of viscous bending under gravity is devised. This is initially extended to a two-component, parallel, dashpot-spring model corresponding to Kelvin solid, and then to a three-component model comprising an initial elastic deflection followed by slow viscoelastic deformation. This three-component model is used to predict the deformation of thin-walled ceramic shapes during firing. Predicted deformations and those observed in fired ceramic pieces are compared for three types of ceramic shape: bars supported as cantilevers, vertical hoops, and three-dimensional ‘mushroom” shaped shells.
