Providence, RI: American Mathematical Society (AMS) (ISBN 978-0-8218-4297-3/hbk). xxxvii, 639 p. (2008).
Alberto Pedro Calderón (1920–1998) is famous for his work in mathematical analysis. The present volume collects a selection of his publications. It starts off with information about his life and work presented by his wife and three of his Ph.D. students, and a list of publications. The main part of the book consists of reprints of Calderón’s most influential articles published between 1949 and 2000.
Getting hold of articles that have been published in somewhat obscure journals has become less and less difficult over the last few years; for this reason, collected works that are published nowadays should do more than just honor the mathematician in question or give easy access to his work. And in fact, the last 80 pages of this volume contain comments on Calderón’s papers written by competent mathematicians familiar with his work. D. Burkholder, M. Christ, Ch. Fefferman, P. Malliavin, Y. Meyer, L. Nirenberg, E. M. Stein and G. Uhlmann discuss Calderón’s articles as well as their influence on more recent work.
