This article is dedicated to the mathematical works of Anatoly Alekseevich Karatsuba, on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday on January 31, 1997. Until the time of the writing of this paper, Karatsuba published altogether 115 papers and books. His main areas of interest are: exponential sums and integrals, Waring’s problem, the Riemann zeta-function and allied Dirichlet series, Dirichlet characters, finite automata and the theory of fast computation. His most important contributions belong to number theory, and the authors give a competent and fairly detailed account of his best known results in this field, followed by a list of his published works.
