Koumousis, V. K.; Armenakas, A. E. Vibrations of infinitely long cylindrical shells of noncircular cross section. (English) Zbl 0584.73084 AIAA J. 24, 536-539 (1986). Frequencies of symmetric modes of oval cylindrical shells are calculated. For infinitely long shells the modes uncouple into purely longitudinal modes (u\(\neq 0,\quad v=w=0)\), which are independent of the geometry of the cross - section, and plane strain modes \((u^ 0\), \(v\neq 0\), \(w\neq 0)\). Results on the bases of the Donnell, Love, Sanders and Flügge theories are compared for three ovality parameters. There are the well known differencies in the case of lower plain strain modes.
