The study of history of mathematical sciences in India. (English) Zbl 1120.01005

In spite of the hard-to-explain lack of knowledge on the contribution brought, along the whole history of mankind by Indian scientists to the field of mathematics, in spite of the numerous debatable – wrong, of course – opinions on the real weight of the Indian part in the advancement of this science, the available data supporting it formably are huge, indeed.
Some hints, provided by the author will be more than sufficient. For example, in 1975, the first Indian artificial satellite – bearing the name of the great Indian man-of-science Aryabhata – was launched on the 1,500th anniversary of his birth. Secondly, in the last 40 years, the Indian original studies and researches devoted to various mathematical, still unsolved, problems might easily account up to 12 volumes of a still not-written national History of Mathematics in India.
A special paragraph is devoted to the ancient Indian chronology (viewed as the backbone of history) – a fascinating reading in itself, while another section deals with the nature and type of scientific research now in progress in India.
