Thoughts about George Mackey and his imprimitivity theorem. (English) Zbl 1178.01051

Doran, Robert S. (ed.) et al., Group representations, ergodic theory, and mathematical physics. A tribute to George W. Mackey. AMS special session honoring the memory of George W. Mackey, New Orleans, LA, USA, January 7–8, 2007. Providence, RI: American Mathematical Society (AMS) (ISBN 978-0-8218-4225-6/pbk). Contemporary Mathematics 449, 247-262 (2008).
Summary: I tell the story of may acquaintance with George Mackey as mathematician and as a man. Next, I compare the “golden years of representation theory” in Russian with those of the West. Finally, I discuss Mackey’s Imprimitivity theorem and igve a natural proof of it in the case of lie groups.
