The algebraic singularities of the operators of plants are discussed, in terms of zero divisors and noncommutative left and right factorizations. A classification of plants in simply connected and multivariable ones is derived. In this framework, problems like uniqueness in system theory, identification of decompositions and classes of equivalence are examined, as well as the embedding of multivariable systems in simple ones and the integration of systems.
