Summary: The paper contains a short biographical note about Issai Schur (1875–1941) and a brief description of his published work. Reference is made to the development of algebraic ideal by Schur and by some of his eminent pupils. The author also relates his experiences as a student at the Humboldt University, Berlin, 1928–1933. {It is remarked that in his early publications the initial letter was written J (not I) which has caused som confusion.}This paper is the text of a lecture delivered to the London Mathematical Society at its meeting A hundred years of algebra. 1830–1930 in Oxford.
