Statistical theory and modelling. In honour of Sir David Cox. (English) Zbl 0734.62001

London etc.: Chapman and Hall. xxiv, 349 p. £27.00 (1991).
[The articles of this volume will not be indexed individually.]
The book presents “a series of review articles, intended as an introduction to a variety of topics suitable for the graduate student and practising statistician. Many of the topics are the subject of book- length treatments by Sir David Cox and the authors of this volume. Each chapter leads to a larger literature. Topics range the breadth of statistics and include modern developments in statistical theory and methods”.
The book contains the following essays. 1. Statistical theory (theoretical concepts, significance tests, optimal tests, estimation, asymptotics), by D. V. Hinkley and N. Reid; 2. Applied statistics (models, inference, adequacy, exploratory and robust methods, multivariate methods), by E. J. Snell and D. V. Hinkley; 3. Generalized linear models (a class of nonlinear regression models, likelihood function, estimation, analysis of deviance, checking the model), by D. Firth; 4. Residuals and diagnostics, by A. C. Davison and E. J. Snell; 5. Life-table analysis, by D. Oakes; 6. Sequential methods (tests with nuisance parameters, clinical trials, inference and decisions, sequential design), by P. Armitage; 7. Time series methods, by P. Bloomfield; 8. Modelling stochastic phenomena, by V. Isham; 9. Optimum design of experiments, by A. C. Atkinson; 10. Likelihood theory, by O. E. Barndorff-Nielsen; 11. Quasi-likelihood and estimating functions, by P. McCullagh; 12. Approximations and asymptotics, by N. Reid.
The references contain 570 items and a complete list of Sir David Cox’s publications is included.
