Wiin Nielsen, A. C. Everybody talks about it . . (English) Zbl 0909.76001 Matematisk-Fysiske Meddelelser. 44(4). Copenhagen: The Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters. 96 p. (1997). This is an attractive book dealing with genesis, development and limitations of the modern scientific weather forecasting, or numerical weather prediction (NWP) as it is preferably called among professionals. The book has been written by an internationally recognized expert in the field, Dr. Wiin Nielsen from Denmark, who personally played a relevant role in the fascinating progress of the subject during the second half of this century. The book, which consists of thirteen well written and richly illustrated chapters, is not a pure and complete history of NWP or meteorology. After a concise description of the development of meteorology from ancient times to the middle of the present century, attention is focussed on describing, in an understandable and equationless style, the physical and mathematical principles which are significant for the weather prediction problem. Thereby, many interesting facts are given about the weather forecasting institutions and the scientists who significantly contributed to the development of the NWP. One of these institutions, which is described in more details, is the European Center for Medium-range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) whose head, since the creation of the center and for a period of years, was the author of this book himself.
