Foreword. (English) Zbl 07278973

From the text: When I was visiting at Berkeley in 2003, a colleague told me that Barenblatt is to mechanics as Mozart is to music: a natural! This is indeed the feeling that one is engulfed with by meeting and interacting with Barenblatt, either at a seminar, or at a technical discussion in his office, or during his lectures, or even crossing his path on campus, when some probing mechanics question is posed to you, and you realize that this is important, and that you don’t know the answer! He brought to the Berkeley campus, where I had the great opportunity to interact with him many times during the last decade, an indomitable intellectual energy in mechanics. Upon his departure for Russia in November 2012, David Steigmann asked me to edit a special issue of Mathematics and Mechanics of Solids, of which he is the editor-in-chief, for the Solid Mechanics and Mathematics community to celebrate the scientific period of Barenblatt’s life that started when he left Russia for the West in 1992, more than 20 years ago. The power of his presence in the whole mechanics community in the US is reflected in the dedication of Professor Jan Achenbach’s paper to this volume “in appreciation of Grigory Barenblatt’s stimulating and inspiring presence among us”. Everybody felt that, indeed!
