Olivares, Alberto E. Note on applied mathematics. (Spanish) Zbl 0911.65040 Bol. Acad. Cienc. Fis. Mat. Nat. 53, No. 173-174, 29-71 (1993). Summary: Sometimes the solution of an algebraic equation of third degree is required in problems of technical applications; often it is necessary to use a handbook to get known formulas for obtaining the roots: the Cardan method, the natural trigonometric or hyperbolic lines. In this paper, we present some tables which give a relatively simple way to obtain a real root of the equation; the other two roots are easy to obtain. It is known that a computer program solves every case, but we have not always access to it.
