Kurke, Herbert Mathematics in Berlin at the Humboldt University: From 1953 until now. (English) Zbl 0903.01013 Begehr, H. G. W. (ed.) et al., Mathematics in Berlin. Basel: Birkhäuser. 169-176 (1998). The paper follows the development of the science of mathematics at the Humboldt University of Berlin between 1953-1997, starting from the three main historical and political events that had a major influence upon it:– erection of the German wall in 1961 resulted in the separation of the mathematicians and ceasing of the traditional contacts;– the reform of the universities (known as the “III. Hochschulreform”), aimed at creating a university for masses, with several, strictly specialized sections; thus, three mathematical institutes have been created, as follows: The Institute of Mathematics I, concentrating on pure mathematics, The Institute of Mathematics II – applied mathematics and The Institute for Mathematical Logic, dealing with the didactics and education of teachers in maths;– reunification of Germany in 1990, trying to re-establish a free academic career for all those deserving it, independent of any political involvement. For the entire collection see [Zbl 0997.00008].
