A stochastic framework of the bivariate life table technique. (English) Zbl 0896.62123
Summary: An attempt is made to apply statistical techniques in the analysis of bivariate life tables. D. R. Cox’s [J. R. Stat. Soc., Ser. B 34, 187-200 (1972; Zbl 0243.62041)] bivariate life table model is modified by considering a piecewise continuous model for the mortality pattern. Maximum likelihood estimates of the conditional probabilities of dying \(q_{21m}\) for the bivariate life table have been obtained. Asymptotic independence of the estimates of the conditional probabilities of death have been deduced from the form of the covariance matrix. Relationships of this estimate with the usual deterministic formula for bivariate life table have been derived. The large sample variance of \(q_{21m}\) has also been obtained.
