The king of Zaragoza al-Mu’taman ibn Hūd (d. 1085) and the theorem of Pythagoras: sources and extensions. (Le roi de Saragosse al-Mu’taman ibn Hūd (m. 1085) et le théorème de Pythagore: ses sources et ses prolongements.) (French. English summary) Zbl 1177.01007

This article first describes the proof for the Pythagorean Theorem as found in Euclid’s Elements, briefly discusses the comments on this proof by Pappus and Proclus, and then presents a series of different proofs by Muslim authors: Thābit ibn Qurra (d. AD 901, as quoted by his later contemporary al-Nayrīzī), Abu ’l-Wafā’ (d. 997/8), Ibn al-Haytham (d. 1039), al-Mu’taman ibn Hūd (reigned over Saragossa from 1082 to 1085), Naṣīr al-Dīn al-Ṭūsī(d. 1274), and Jamshīd al-Kāshī(d. 1429). An introduction gives details of the life and works of al-Mu’taman and of the dynasty of the Banū Hūd of which he was a member. Another version of the same article was published in the Actes du 8ème Colloque Maghrébin sur l’Histoire des Mathématiques Arabes (Tunis, 2006).
