Ellis, G. F. R. The evolution of inhomogeneities in expanding Newtonian cosmologies. (English) Zbl 0697.76133 Mon. Not. R. Astron. Soc. 243, No. 3, 509-516 (1990). Summary: New variables (covariant and gauge invariant quantities) have recently been defined that characterize density inhomogeneities in an almost uniform relativistic universe in a transparent way. In this paper the Newtonian version of this formalism is derived and its properties examined. A second-order vector ordinary differential equation enables a unified and transparent derivation of a series of results on the growth of density inhomogeneities in the expanding universe.
