The electrically induced stress in the dielectric of a transmission coaxial line. (English) Zbl 1065.78015

This paper uses a conformal mapping technique to examine the stress induced in the dielectric material forming a rectangular coaxial transmission line. The result yields the components of the stress parallel and perpendicular to the electric field, and also the identification of the point where maximum stress occurs. These, and other results, are obtained by expressing the electric field in terms of elliptic functions. It is shown that the stress distribution in the dielectric can be improved through electrostriction when the dependence of the permittivity on the strain is taken into account. The general pattern of the paper proceeds from an introduction and a brief discussion of the Schwarz-Christoffel transformation, to the consideration of the field and stress distribution, during which some numerical results are presented.
