Spectral properties of a system describing fast pulsating DFB lasers. (English) Zbl 0883.35113

A model describing self-pulsating distributed feedback semiconductor lasers is investigated with mathematical rigour. Qualitative statements on its spectral properties are proved.
We investigate a mathematical model which consists of two coupled wave equations for the forward and backward travelling waves. It turns out that the physical effect of self-\(Q\)-switching may be seen in correspondence to the degeneracy for certain eigenvalues for the coupled wave system. Some statements on the spectral behaviour of the system, which is essential for the underlying physical effects, are given and proved.
