The status of women faculty in departments of statistics and biostatistics in the United States. (English) Zbl 1341.01058

Pearson, Willie jun. (ed.) et al., Advancing women in science. An international perspective. Cham: Springer (ISBN 978-3-319-08628-6/hbk; 978-3-319-08629-3/ebook). 227-232 (2015).
Interesting results of recent and historical statistics are presented such as the following: (1) The proportion of women Ph.D.s produced nationally is generally greater than the fraction of women in professorial positions in statistics and biostatistics. (2) “There appears to be no relationship between the proportion of degrees awarded to women by a department and the proportion of women among tenured and tenure track faculty in that department.” (3) However, “departments with a female chair have significantly larger proportions of tenured and tenure track faculty who are women”. (4) There are also interesting relationships when both gender and race are taken into account when comparing departments across different position types.
Not unexpectedly, the determination of causes “requires further study”. Quotations are given from a survey seeking information on how departmental leadership affects gender composition of a department, including suggestions from chairs on how senior leaders and chairs can make a difference.
