Thirteen correct solutions to the “problem of points” and their histories. (English) Zbl 1320.60005

Der Autor präsentiert und diskutiert 13 Lösungen des historischen Problems der Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung von Chevalier de Méré, genannt ‘Problem of Points (POP)’, zur Gewinnverteilung bei einem vorzeitigen Spielabbruch für zwei oder mehr Spieler (POP-2, bzw. POP-\(n\)). Jede Lösungsmethode wird ausführlich dargestellt und bezüglich ihrer Verallgemeinerung für mehr als zwei Spieler untersucht.
Zu den Lösungsmethoden gehören die Aufzählungsmethode, die Rekursionsmethode, das Pascalsche Dreieck als ‘Arithmetic Triangle’, Binomial- und negative Binomialverteilung, inverse Wahrscheinlichkeiten, Differenzengleichungen von Lagrange und erzeugende Funktionen. Antoine Meyer benutzte einen Lösungsansatz mit Hilfe der Verteilungsfunktion und der B-Funktion für das POP-2 Problem. Paul Mansion lieferte einen Lösungsansatz basierend auf der negativen Binomialverteilung, der von Catalan und Chrystal variiert wurde, wobei der letztere Ansatz nicht für mehr als zwei Spieler erweitert werden kann. Eine elegante Lösung lieferte C. Smoryński [Chapters in probability. London: College Publications (2012; Zbl 1258.60003)] für das POP-\(n\) Problem durch die Verwendung von Markoff-Ketten und die zugehörige Matrix der Übergangswahrscheinlichkeiten.
