Summary: Conversational agents are computer programs that utilize natural language technologies to engage users in human-like, text-based, information-seeking and task-oriented “dialogs”. They can support a broad range of applications in business enterprises, education, government, healthcare and entertainment. In this paper we propose and implement a conversational agent based on AIML, with speech recognition and text-to-speech capabilities and a virtual avatar. We describe the challenges we had to face in order to improve the artificial intelligence, and the quality of the speech synthesis for the Romanian language.
