New, Geoffrey Introduction to nonlinear optics. (English) Zbl 1227.78001 Cambridge: Cambridge University Press (ISBN 978-0-521-87701-5/hbk). xv, 257 p. (2011). This is a textbook aimed for graduate students, with the intention to introduce the vast area of nonlinear optics in a relatively smooth way, starting with basic physical concepts and gradually increasing the level of the mathematical difficulty. Main topics included in the book are frequency mixing, crystal optics, third-order optical nonlinearities, dispersions in optical media, nonlinear optics of pulses, some resonant effects, and the generation of higher harmonics. Out of 10 chapters presenting the material, the first 6 are written at an “easier” level, as it concerns the mathematical formalism, while the other four are presented at a more sophisticated level.
