Investigations in higher arithmetic. Edited in German by H. Maser. Facsimile reprint of the 1889 original published by Julius Springer. (Disquisitiones Arithmeticae. Untersuchungen über höhere Arithmetik.) (German) Zbl 1167.11001
Remagen: Verlag Kessel (ISBN 978-3-941300-09-5/pbk). xiii, 695 p. (2009).
There is nothing more to say about this book by the princeps mathematicorum which was published in Latin in 1801 and which shaped classical number theory. The present publication is a photomechanical reproduction of the famous German translation by H. Maser (1889; JFM 21.0166.04)]. It contains not only the text of the Disquisitiones Arithmicae but also some mathematical treasures from Gauss’ abatement. Although it is creditable that Maser’s translation is now back in print this translation itself seems now ripe to be re-examined and critically accompanied by a historian of mathematics. We still have to wait.
