Mathematical principles of anisotropic mesh adaptation. (English) Zbl 1122.65124
The author examines mesh adaptation for finite-element grids, showing that what matters is the choice of a monitor function to control equidistribution and alignment of the grid. Suitable monitor functions are presented, based on anistropic estimates of the interpolation error. Applications to two-dimensional problems are given, one with an oblique shock meeting a boundary layer.
