From now and then, it occurs that a successful book is published, reprinted and re-reprinted, and then, for various reasons, is withdrawn from the market. And then it is replaced by another book written by another author on nearly the same topic. This is exactly what we are experiencing with the three pioneering books on synergetics by H. Haken [Synergetic computers and cognition. A top-down approach to neureal nets. 2nd enlarged ed. Springer Series in Synergetics (2004; Zbl 1069.68088)] and the present one. A reader who is acquainted with Haken’s books will find himself in a quite customary framework in the present one which covers essentially the same topics: the basic mathematics of dynamical systems (stochastics, information theory, statistical mechanics, thermodynamics, fractals, iterative mappings) and their applications to neural networks, protein folding, evolution, developmental biology and social system.
