The objective of the paper is to present an experimental system that serves as a prototype for studies of chaotic mixing in three-dimensional bounded flows. The system is an idealization of a mixing stirred tank. The flow structure reveals detailed chaotic structures and chains of high-period islands. Numerical experiments are performed and compared with particle image velocimetry and flow visualization results.
