This paper is devoted to the production functions. During empirical implementation of econometric production functions we run into a number of difficult conceptual and data problems. For example: Is the proposed estimation procedure appropriate? Can we take all or most of the input variables as “independent”? The author looks at this question from a somewhat idiosyncratic historical perspective, tracing out the changing ideas and justifications offered in defense of the various suggested econometric procedures as they evolved alongside advances in data availability and computing ability.
