This collection of articles is intended to give a coherent presentation of complex mechanical systems with motion-dependent discontinuities. These systems form an important branch of engineering problems, where a nonlinear dynamics can be implemented by impacts in otherwise linear systems. Another type of commonly met nonlinearity is due to friction and its combinations with impacts. Practitioners in the field attempt at constructing and solving mathematical models for such problems like dynamical phenomena in gear boxes, dynamical instabilities in spinning disks, impact-dry-friction dampers, nonlinear dynamics of orthogonal metal cutting, and ultrasonic drilling of hard materials.
