Summary: We describe some numerical techniques for the total variation image restoration method, namely some preconditioning issues and modular solvers for the solution of the Euler-Lagrange equations when constraints are present. We also highlight extension of this technique to handle color images, and to reduce the staircasing effect. Finally, we present segmentation and active contour techniques based on the Mumford-Shah model.
