Simpson-type paradoxes, dependence, and ageing. (English) Zbl 0944.60033
The authors state a general version of Simpson’s paradox, and then they give conditions, in various settings, under which the paradox can be avoided. In particular, they provide conditions under which various notions of positive dependence are closed under mixtures. Finally, they use a characterization of the IFR and DFR ageing notions, given by N. A. Langberg, R. V. Léon and F. Proschan [Ann. Probab. 8, 1163-1170 (1980; Zbl 0448.60016)], in order to relate some paradoxes concerning ageing properties and paradoxes of Simpson type.
