On the second-order work in plasticity. (English) Zbl 0917.73026

In what should be regarded as a contribution to the foundations of the classical theory of plasticity, the author establishes a second-order work inequality and shows that fundamental qualitative properties can be deduced from a macroscopic constitutive law of behavior of elastoplastic solids. Illustrations are given of the use of the theorem. The classical ideas of convexity of yield surfaces and normality of strain rate vectors are also discussed, in light of the results presented here. References to works of Drucker and Hill are frequently made.
