Quantitative evaluation of color image segmentation results. (English) Zbl 0908.68204
Summary: We consider the problem of the automatic evaluation of the results of color image segmentation. J. Liu and Y.-H. Yang [Multiresolution color image segmentation. IEEE Trans. on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence 16, 689-700 (1994)] have proposed an evaluation function, inspired by the qualitative criteria for good image segmentation established by R. H. Haralick and L. G. Shapiro [Image segmentation techniques. Computer Vision Graphics Image Processing 29, 100-132 (1985)], that does not require that the user set any parameter or threshold value. We identify some limitations in this evaluation function, and propose two enhanced functions that correspond more closely to visual judgement.
