Nakanishi, Masato; Kida, Teruhiko; Nakajima, Tomoya Asymptotic solutions for two-dimensional low Reynolds number flow around an impulsively started circular cylinder. (English) Zbl 0891.76024 J. Fluid Mech. 334, 31-59 (1997). The authors study the unsteady flow field of an incompressible fluid around an impulsively started cylinder. The paper assumes that the Reynolds number is small and determines the flow field analytically by using the method of matched asymptotic expansions. It is shown that five regions are necessary to complete the matching process in space and in time. The authors finally discuss the difference between the two-dimensional flow around the cylinder and the three-dimensional flow around the sphere.
