Through a reporter’s eyes: the life of Stefan Banach. Transl. from the Polish and ed. by Ann Kostant a. Wojbor Woyczyński. (English) Zbl 0849.01019
Basel: Birkhäuser. x, 137 p. (1996).
A lively account of Stefan Banach’s life (1892-1945), one of legendary figures of modern mathematics, written by a non-mathematician for a universal audience. The original has appeared in Polish (Warsaw, 1992) and this is a revised English version in which both translator and editor “undertook extensive reorganizing, editing and rewriting $$(\dots)$$ as well as the substantial addition of new relevant material” including photographs (there are none in the original), an index of names, and an appendix on mathematics in Banach’s time. Their work has thus greatly improved the book, although occasional misprints and omitting sources of many lengthy quotations somewhat diminish its value. Nevertheless, it is a good and enjoyable reading.
