We present a Riemann-solver adaption approach that leads to practical algorithms of comparable efficiency to that of traditional methods. We present also very simple linearizations to be deployed in the smooth parts of the flow field; we also indicate robust Riemann solvers to be used elsewhere in a single numerical method of the Godunov type. The approach is first applied to the time-dependent Euler equations. Multidimensional problems are solved either by a finite volume formulation or space-operator splitting.
