The author considers the function \(\{f(x): x\in \mathbb{R}^ d\}\) which is a real valued function of \(d\) variables approximated by \(\{s(x): x\in\mathbb{R}^ d\}\) via the radial basis function method and surveys its various advantages over the usual piecewise polynomials.
