zbMATH — the first resource for mathematics

The seventy-fifth anniversary celebration. (English) Zbl 0780.01005
In 1893 B. F. Finkel founded a new journal “The American Mathematical Monthly”, “devoted solely to mathematics and suitable to the needs of teachers of mathematics in ... schools.” The first number of this journal appeared in January, 1894. The author describes the history of the journal, its economic difficulties, the efforts of E. H. Moore for saving the journal and making it finally to the official journal of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). The second part, more essayistic in style, is a homage to the MAA and its journal with frequent falling backs on known facts of the history of mathematics from ancient to modern times.
