The author, in this book, has assembled the main results of damage mechanics developed since 1970’s into a coherent instructional unit. The main purpose is to assist the design, processing, testing and control of mechanical components in engineering.
The first chapter deals with the phenomenological aspects of damage and the main ideas of modelling applied to the one-dimensional case. This chapter includes a section on damage measurements. The main part of damage mechanics dealing with couplings between damage and strains is covered in the second chapter. The third chapter deals with kinetic laws of damage evolution, where various models proposed for brittle, ductile and creep damage, low and high cycle fatigue of metals, polymers, concrete, ceramics and composites are unified. In the fourth and the last chapter, methods are described for predicting the conditions for crack initiation in structural components. A post-processor of damage growth up to crack initiation is described in detail.
The book is very useful for a course of lectures and as reference material by research workers.
