The textbook under review is based upon a course of lectures in theoretical mechanics, which was delivered by the author during many years at the Moscow Aviation Institute. The main objective of this book is to present, in a didactical way, the foundations of theoretical mechanics and to give engineering students the necessary experience in solving practical mechanical problems.
The text consists of 14 chapters, which cover the usual topics: kinematics of a particle and systems of particles, Newtonian, Hamiltonian and Lagrangian mechanics, celestial mechanics, dynamics of variable masses, linear vibrations and stability theories. In contradiction to traditional textbooks, the author pays the main attention not to the elementary problems of kinematics and statics, but to the methods of analytical dynamics, which are of greater importance for various practical applications.
The book is intended for a first course in undergraduate theoretical mechanics; it should be of interest for students as well as for specialists on analytical mechanics.
