Mathematical methods of operations research. Repr. of the orig., publ. by McGraw-Hill, 1959. (English) Zbl 0745.90025

Dover Books on Advanced Mathematics. New York: Dover Publications, Inc. ix, 460 p. (1988).
This is the unique book which provides all principal methods and the historical development of the subject of Operations Research. Its most outstanding features are: (1) Development of mathematical techniques and procedures in a clear problem oriented style; (2) History and overview of the subject; (3) A new chapter 13 on multicriteria decision making which provides the thoughtful processes that researchers may have to use in order to tackle real world complex problems; (4) Excellent presentation of classical operations research methods.
The author first indicates his disappointment in not having a concrete philosophy in Operations Research yet and then goes on to discuss the importance of continued activity in any area until such a philosophy emerges. The book then provides chapters on optimization, programming, game theory, queuing theory and applications in probability and statistics. This book serves as an excellent reference to those reading in Operations Research, particularly it records early research which is normally not accessible to present day workers.
In summary the book provides the student with resources and thoughts including basic mathematical techniques that are used in Operations Research. It is a valuable reference made available at a very reasonable price.
