This is the last volume of the set of three excellent volumes of the author on biomechanics. Researchers in biomechanics waited for many years for this book and they should be pleased with its material and the way in which it is presented. The author is known as the modern father of the subject biomechanics which can be further confirmed by these books.
In the first volume, Biomechanics: Mechanical properties of living tissues (1981), the geometrical structure and the rheological properties of various materials, tissues and organs were presented. In the second volume, Biodynamics: Circulation (1984), the physiology of blood circulation was analyzed. In the third volume, the present one, the methods of problem formulation, solution, and validation are further illustrated by studying the motion of man and animals, the internal and external fluid flow, and stress distribution in the bodies, strength of tissues and organs, and the relationship between stress and growth.
The book is organized in thirteen chapters. Chapter 1 provides an outline of Newton’s laws of motion and the basic equations of solid and fluid mechanics. In Chapter 2, the motion of a system of connected elastic or rigid bodies is presented. Chapters 3 and 4 describe external flows, dealing with the flow around bodies moving in wind and water, in locomotion, flying and swimming. Internal flows, describing the flow of blood in blood vessels, urine in kidney, ureter and urethra, gas in airways, water and other body fluid in interstitial space, is presented in chapters 5 to 9. The rest of the book is devoted to the biological effects of stress and strain.
In conclusion, this is a well-written book, with a reasonable number of good exercises and interesting material. The well-organized and careful presentation makes it easy to use this book as a text for graduate students and as a source book for senior researchers.
