Newton, Isaac [Krylov, A. N.; Polak, L. S.; Filonovich, S. R.] Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica. Transl. from the Latin with commentary by A. N. Krylov. 3rd ed. Ed. and with a preface by L. S. Polak. With an appendix by S. R. Filonovich. (Математические начала натурал ь ной философии.) (Russian) Zbl 0732.01044 Klassiki Nauki. Moskva: Nauka. 690 p. R. 6.00 (1989). The authors have given a very precise translation of all three books of the Latin original of Sir Isaac Newton’s “Mathematical principles of natural philosophy and his system of the world”. The text and diagrams are verbatim with the exception of a few figures where this text differs from the original and also the standard Motte translation (1729) into English. Numerous supplementary footnotes have been added to explain some of the more concise rhetorical sections which add to the general ethos of the work. In addition many biographical notes are added with particular relevance to the development of mathematics in Eastern Europe and Russia.
