L. Greenberg [Ann. Math., II. Ser. 84, 433-441 (1966; Zbl 0161.274)] proved that the finitely generated degenerate groups discovered by L. Bers in 1965 are actually geometrically infinite. In this article the author surveys some recent and interesting results concerning the nature of geometrically infinite, but finitely generated Kleinian groups.
