Calabi-Yau manifolds obtained by dividing the torus by a discrete symmetry group are studied, and some new manifolds are constructed. The simplicity of these manifolds allows for a detailed understanding of topological aspects of superstring compactification. We explain in general and by way of explicit example how to compute the intersection matrix which determines the couplings of the low-energy field theory. It is found that generically most of the Yukawa couplings vanish for topological reasons.
