The authors have traced the development of research on the problem of fluid flow above an infinite rotating disk. A discussion of the two-disk problem is also included. In these problems, fundamental mathematical aspects are considered with numerical solutions and expansion methods. The relation between solutions to the one-disk and the two-disk problem are given. A few results are obtained for the stability of the stationary solutions to the one-disk and two-disk problems. When experimental results are considered, von Kármán swirling flow in a finite radial geometry is of fundamental importance and this case is also considered here.
