The ‘fitting problem’ in cosmology. (English) Zbl 0626.53071
The paper considers the problem of obtaining a smooth model of the universe from lumpy (realistic) data sets. After summarizing the nature of observational coordinates and observational quantities in cosmology in general, the null data approach to the fitting problem is discussed. The fitting problem is regarded as consisting of a correspondence problem and an optimal parameter problem.
