Vector and parallel processors in computational science. Proceedings of the Second International Conference on Vector and Parallel Processors in Computational Science, Oxford, August 28–31, 1984. (English) Zbl 0578.00010
Amsterdam: North-Holland. xi, 386 p. Dfl. 225.00 (1985).
The proceedings contain papers presented at the second conference on Vector and Parallel Processors in Compuational Science (VAPP) held in Oxford in August 1984. The papers are grouped into four sections: (1) General papers, giving a survey of existing vector and/or parallel machines (Cray-1, -X-MP, Cyber 205, FACOM VP100/200, Denelcor HEP, PAX- 32, hypercube, dataflow machines, ICL DAP, FPS-164 etc.) and of their current use mainly in Europe and Japan, and papers on (2) hardware and languages, (3) numerical methods and algorithms, and (4) applications. The proceedings provide an excellent introduction into and overview of the state of the art of parallel processing in scientific applications. As is reflected in the papers the main experience to date has been with vector processors like the Cray-1 or the Cyber 205 and with the SIMD-type Distributed Array Processor (DAP) from ICL which are successfully used for abroad range of applications. Some papers report on their almost throughout positive experience with multiple vector processors and other types of (larger scale) MIMD-machines. The latter obviously will be the main area for future research in parallel computing.
Papers of mathematical relevance are reviewed individually. The reviews appear in the appropriate sections of the Zentralblatt.
