Theory and applications of correspondence analysis. (English) Zbl 0555.62005
London–Orlando etc.: Academic Press. xi, 364 pp. $ 56.00; £34.00 (1984).
The two volumes by J.-P. Benzécri [L’analyse des données. Tome I: La taxinomie; Tome II: L’analyse des correspondances. Paris etc.: Dunod (1973; Zbl 0297.62038 and Zbl 0297.62039)], described a technique for finding low-dimensional subspaces which lie closest to a cloud of multivariate data. The volume by J.-P. Benzécri and F. Benzécri [Pratique de l’analyse des données. 1: Analyse des correspondances. Exposé élémentaire. Paris: Dunod (1980; Zbl 0446.62001)] was an elementary textbook on the subject. The present volume is the first text in English on this subject. It requires a knowledge of basic matrix theory, and develops some specialized matrix theory, on which the mathematical technique is based. The theory is illustrated by numerous examples, drawn from genetics, psychology, sociology, pharmacology, nutrition, criminology, and other applied areas.
