Surface waves in an elastic body with restricted shear. (English) Zbl 0545.73016

Summary: A theoretical study is made of the propagation of surface waves in a semi-infinite body made of an incompressible isotropic elastic material in which shear is prohibited on an orthogonal network of embedded fibers. Detailed results are obtained for four orientations of the network in each of which one family of fibers is placed parallel to the traction- free boundary of the body. Whenever a surface wave exists it is unique, but examples of non-existence are found, as also are singular limits and cases of a surface wave being accompanied by and degenerating into an exceptional body wave.
