Auctions and the German UMTS-Auction. (English) Zbl 1294.91069

Summary: The German UMTS-Auction in August 2000 attracted, like similar auctions in Great Britain and The Netherlands earlier in the year 2000, a lot of public attention and money. At this auction 4 to 6 licenses to offer third generation cell-phone service in Germany were on the block to be sold, raising a total revenue of 98.8072 BDM. In the following we outline the mathematics underlying the design of auctions and the light it sheds on the German UMTS-Auction. (Here UMTS is short for Universal Mobile Telecommunications System).
